Born on January 17th 1971 Richard Burns was a British world champion rally driver, who topped the World Rally Championship scoresheets in 2001 having wound up runner-up in both 1999 and 2000. His rallying was put into stark perspective when he blacked out behind the wheel of his road car on the way to the Rally GB in November. Late on Friday, November 25, 2005, four years to the day after winning the World Rally Championship, Richard died at the age of 34, after having been in a coma for some days as a result of a brain tumour.

Richard was convinced that the support and inspiration that he received from his friends and family was absolutely invaluable at this time, always aware of the physical and emotional burden placed upon them. These realisations inspired the establishment of the Richard Burns Foundation, dedicated to support and inspire others who are living and battling with cancer and other serious conditions. Dedicated, prepared, optimistic, determined and caring; all perfect ways to describe the way Richard approached his driving, led his life and fought his illness. The valuable qualities Richard used as a driver and as someone fighting for his life are exactly the key values that are the motivation behind the Richard Burns Foundation.

Every day ten families are told their child has cancer. As the UK's leading children's cancer charity, CLIC Sargent is the only organisation to offer them all round care and support. That’s because we’re there every step of the way, during treatment, in hospital and at home and after treatment.

Our mission is to be there for each family, caring every step of the way, providing individual support to children and young people with cancer and leukaemia and their families.

The care and treatment of children with cancer has come a long way and today seven out of ten children diagnosed will survive. CLIC Sargent is committed to improving this figure further through its specialist care and by funding both clinical and social research projects.
